Outdoor plant wall – vertical gardens on facades
Although an outdoor green wall is still an uncommon phenomenon in Scandinavia, its presence in the urban landscape is increasing. A living outdoor green wall offers many economic, ecological and social benefits. Lush outdoor green walls help to purify the air, regulate temperature and improve the sound environment while promoting biodiversity in the city.
Vertical gardens, including outdoor plant walls, also contribute to climate-proofing the city and promote general well-being in our urban environment.
We at Greenworks are behind several of the relatively few exterior vertical gardens with outdoor plant walls that exist in Sweden.
Botany

Unique botanical expertise for Nordic climate
The microclimate can differ significantly between different locations in the city. Greenworks always conducts light and location studies before outdoor projects to ensure that the plant selection is sustainable in the long term. Since the placement on the facade does not enjoy the same wind protection as at ground level, higher demands are placed on the botanical selection. The large temperature differences between summer and winter in our climate are also a challenge. Greenworks' botanical knowledge and experience of vertical gardens indoors and outdoors guarantee unique and lasting projects that contribute to a vibrant urban environment.
Solar studies

Solar studies and zone-adapted irrigation
Before each project, the specific microclimate is investigated, taking into account temperatures, wind and sun studies. These preliminary studies give us a number of different locations on the facade in question, which provides the conditions to develop the right irrigation plan. With a balanced amount of water and nutrients in each irrigation zone, we ensure good operating economy.
Greenworks conducts solar studies early in the process to also ensure the right plant species for each zone on the facade. Artificial light is primarily used to create an exciting effect during the dark hours of the day.
Maintenance

Outdoor plant wall with reliable minimal maintenance
Although the specific microclimate of the location creates certain conditions and limitations, our customers can influence the visual effect that the outdoor plant wall will create. Colorful perennials can coexist with evergreen species, but spring bulbs are also found as elements in our plant landscapes. In general, perennials require more maintenance than woody plants. Since outdoor walls in our climate zones change over the seasons, we normally carry out maintenance efforts twice a year, in spring and autumn.
Using remote control is especially important for facade greenery. By monitoring our outdoor green walls, we can make necessary seasonal adjustments to irrigation and nutrient levels.
Ecosystem services

Ecosystem services
Vertical gardens on facades are still an unusual phenomenon in Scandinavia, but are becoming an increasingly common feature of the cityscape. An outdoor green wall offers many economic, ecological and social benefits. Magnificent vertical gardens help to purify the air, regulate the temperature, improve the sound environment, and benefit biodiversity in the city. Vertical gardens also contribute to climate-proofing the city and contributing to general well-being.
The importance and interest in including green spaces in the planning phase of our urban development is greater than ever – both to achieve environmental goals and because ecosystem services depend on biodiversity. Greenworks is dedicated to creating a species richness and variation in size of vegetation, which creates more viable vertical gardens and habitats for insects and small birds.
Lack of continuous green spaces is common in urban environments. Green walls on facades are a good solution for building green corridors, which promote biodiversity.
